Designer Tips That Will Make Your Bathroom Feel Like a Spa

Considering women spend, on average, two years and 40 days in the bathroom, why not make yours feel as spa-like as possible? “After a long day or stressful week, it’s important to practice self-care and have a place where you can relax,” says designer Abbe Fenimore, founder of Studio Ten 25.

“Believe it or not, you can create a spa-like feel in your bathroom easily! Add a few luxury toiletries and draw up a bubble bath to create your own personal sanctuary at home. ”

Here, two top designers share their tips for giving your bathroom the spa treatment, so you can come home to a relaxing environment every day.

Invest in good towels

Nothing can destroy your post-bath Zen quite like having to dry off with an old, pilled towel. “Get yourself some new, high-quality towels and get rid of the old scratchy ones that you have had in there for who knows how long,” says designer Emily Henderson. To keep the good vibes going, she says to wrap yourself in something plush and oversized. Even better: Install a towel warmer.

Add some scent

You know that smell that makes you feel relaxed the minute you step into a spa? Well, the concept of creating an experience with scent has been scientifically proven, and happily, you can easily recreate it in your bathroom at home. Henderson says to think about the specific scents that trigger feelings of relaxation, and bring them into your bathroom with a room spray, a good candle, or a diffuser. “Having a fresh scent in your bathroom every time you come in is something that can instantly bring calm to your morning or nightly routine,” she explains.

Splurge in the shower

There’s nothing more relaxing than a long shower after a long day. So, upgrade your time in the bathroom with a waterfall or massage shower head. This is an affordable investment that can make even a small shower feel like a spa escape. Try this highly-rated option from Amazon.

Arrange your essentials cleverly

When it comes to self-care, a set of good products make all the difference. “Splurge on bath salts, oils, and bubbles,” says Fenimore. “They make you feel like a queen, and they look pretty placed on a tray on the counter. ” Create an artful arrangement on your countertops with luxe bottles placed on mirrored trays, and stash the everyday stuff underneath.

Dim the lights

The use of dimmable, overhead lights can set a spa-like tone. The pros recommend LED bulbs, paying close attention to the brightness. You’ll also want to light the shower and tub areas, but doing so can be tricky. Be sure to use fixtures that are designed for wet locations.

Turn up the noise

Introducing sound is a surefire way to set the mood, so consider making the time you spend in your bathroom a full-on sensory experience. “Splurge on waterproof speakers or invest in a great bluetooth speaker for your bathroom,” says Feinemore. “Having your favorite tunes or audiobook playing as you relax makes all the difference. ”

Embrace the robe life

One of the best parts about going to a spa is lounging around in a robe and doing nothing, so why not do the same at home? Grab yourself a plush, gorgeous robe and a pair of slippers, and hang out with a good book–or trashy magazine, if that’s your thing.
