Cloud Colour, is the new hair trend, hot off the Mary Katrantzou AW19 catwalk

We’re always on the look out for a new hair colour trend, from rainbow brights to ombre styles. So when hair colour pro, Josh Wood, offered us an exclusive sneak peek behind the scenes to see his colour creations for Mary Katrantzou’s Autumn/Winter ’19 catwalk show, we jumped at the chance.

And we were not disappointed!

Josh is the go-to catwalk colourist for designer’s wanting innovative hair colour, alongside the styling, to top off their collections. He was the man behind the candyfloss hair hues at Marc Jacobs’ Spring/Summer Show, cementing pastels as the hottest shades of the season. He was also a pioneer of the grey hair trend, turning supermodel Kristen McMenamy a stunning silver shade.

With Mary Katrantzou’s signature kaleidoscope prints always on our fashion wish list, we couldn’t wait to see what their collab would bring. In the week before Mary’s London Fashion Week show we headed over to Josh Wood’s London Atelier, to see the show prep in action.

Josh explains the inspiration behind the looks. “Mary’s collection is sectioned into four worlds relating to the four elements; earth, wind, fire and water. We’ve worked with the amazing fabrics in the collection to create two patterned hair techniques that we’ve called ‘Colour Clouds’ and ‘Horizon Colour’.

“For ‘Colour Clouds’ we created a centre of intense colour that blurs and blends out to the palest colour on the edges,” says Redken’s Global Colour Creative. He reveals the team looked at Rothko paintings for colour inspiration, and Monet for the colour blends. Also, working with show makeup artist Lynsey Alexander, to see how the relationship with the hair colour worked with the colours in the collection.

The team set to work with sponges to layer, paint and smudge Redken’s professional City Beats colour onto the hair pieces. “At the fitting we tried them out and this look worked best on dark blondes and lighter shades, so these pieces will be added to the girls that have a light hair base. ”

“For the darker haired girls, we’ve created ‘Horizon Colour,” says Josh. “The extensions are coloured dark at the root, in shades of ink, emerald, or violet and fade out in a reverse ombre to paler ends. ”

So for the finished look? “Hair is very undone, with a raw natural texture, to showcase the colour, and lots of hair covering the face. ”

He also reveals some lucky models may even have the colour for keeps. And we’re next in line, right?
