Cher Will Play Meryl Streep’s Mom in the ‘Mamma Mia! ’ Reboot

It’s been six years since Cher starred in a movie, but she’ll reportedly be making her return to the silver screen with the Mamma Mia! sequel, in a role that seems kind of confusing at first glance.

According to the New York Post, she’ll be playing the mother of Meryl Streep’s character Donna – odd, since Streep is 68 while Cher is just 71, but the singer/actress/bona fide cultural icon will star in flashbacks that take place in the ’60s. Fitting, given that she (and her waist-length hippie hair) rose to prominence during the decade.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is slated for release on June 20, 2018, a full ten years after the original film hit theatres, and Cher confirmed her participation via Twitter, much to the delight of fans. Especially the one to whose tweet she replied.

It’s unclear what the exact plot of the sequel is, but it sounds like a large focus will be Donna’s coming-of-age. Lily James is signed on to play young Donna, while Amanda Seyfried will reprise her role as Donna’s daughter Sophie. Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Julie Walters will also return.

And while I’m not convinced the world really needs a Mamma Mia! sequel, Cher and Meryl Streep sharing screentime is enough of a reason for me to commit to watching it. Oh, and the promise of disco-era fashion inspiration doesn’t hurt either.
