Cellophane may be an unlikely starting place for a beauty trend. But Jennifer Lopez just experimented with cellophane nails and almost overnight it’s been tipped as this spring’s must-try manicure.
The trend is exactly as it sounds: a dreamy, holographic sheen that takes inspiration from the hazy rainbow hues that appear on a sheet of cellophane; think mermaidcore meets glazed donut nails with a shot of iridescence thrown in for good measure.
Plus, it’s the perfect manicure for spring if chrome nails feel too punchy but you’ve already exhausted the full spectrum of nude nails.
That said, cellophane nails still feed into the minimalist aesthetic that pairs fresh-faced skin with dewy makeup – they’re just less ordinary. Undeniably polished, the manicure also works for a high-glamour red carpet look, as Jennifer proves.
For the premier of husband Ben Affleck’s new film Air, her manicurist Tom Bachik adorned her long almond-shaped nails with a cellophane polish that is part transparent and party milky.
In his Instagram post, Tom revealed how Jennifer paired her manicure with a rhinestone-embellished clutch and oversized ring. It was a considered move as her nails delicately mirror the way the crystals refract light, creating subtle flashes of colour.
