Although we have an affinity for all of Britney Spears’ epic costumes and the stylish looks she serves up on her Instagram page, the songstress is not synonymous with high-fashion–that is, until now. Spears is serving up serious ’00s nostalgia with her latest gig as the face of Kenzo as the pop star stars in the brand’s La Collection Memento N°2 campaign, clad in baseball hats, colorful cropped sweatshirts, and even denim hot pants, all while giving us a glimpse at her toned midriff, (and her belly button ring). The partnership marks the first time the star was selected for a luxury campaign, (and we couldn’t be more excited).
Lensed by famed photog Peter Lindbergh, the concept of the campaign is “Icons” which is why the fashion house enlisted the star for the role. “Number one, Britney Spears is an icon, so I think in terms of her iconography, she fits into our Memento project perfectly,” creative director Humberto Leon said in a press release from the brand. “She is a legend in her field. We will remember her for the rest of everyone’s lives as an icon. She’s up there with Michael and Madonna and everyone who we consider icons. Britney is up there. I think that in many ways, growing up she is also synonymous with denim with me. When her and Justin [Timberlake] came out in their denim outfits, that is like an iconic look.”

From denim to crop tops and tiny backpacks, the campaign pays tribute to the eye-catching styles of the late ’80s, specifically the 1986 debut of the Kenzo Jeans brand, but the bold fashion also reminds us of the trends of the early ’00s–which just so happens to be the same time Spears dominated the scene and solidified her place as the queen of pop music.
While the current fashion climate is ruled by bloggers and influencers, none have proven to be as iconic as Spears, who completely captivated our attention during the TRL era thanks to the way she pushed the envelope with her sense of style–and it’s only fitting that Spears seizes the spotlight, once again, with the nostalgic shoot.
