The 19-year-old mega-star – who is also a co-chair alongside Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet, and Naomi Osaka at this year’s biggest night in fashion – took to the red carpet for the first time (she was too young to attend before!) and looked absolutely incredible in a blush gown with a wavy platinum blonde bob.
Billie Eilish did not come to play at the Met Gala 2021.
The stunning tulle gown complete with an incredible long train was designed by Oscar de la Renta and was inspired by old Hollywood glamour icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, the design team revealed in a short clip.
The look is certainly a departure from Billie’s usual look, as noted by red carpet host Keke Palmer, who questioned Billie on her style switch-up.
“I’ve always wanted to do this. I was just scared,” Billie replied, revealing that she’s been on a journey of self-discovery over the past year.
“I didn’t feel comfortable in my skin, and it was time,” she added.
Billie also shared that her look was inspired by her love of Barbies growing up: “The holiday Barbie was my favourite thing in the world,” she said. “I would ask for it for Christmas every single year. Genuinely, that was my inspiration.”
We worship at the altar of Billie.
Billie was styled by British Vogue’s style director Dena Giannini. “Billie had always dreamed of wearing a proper ballgown – particularly something corseted, thanks to her love of Barbies growing up – but she thought that it might be in an acid-green colourway or something along those lines,” Giannini said. “After her British Vogue cover, though, her style began to evolve.”
And so, with the help of creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, Billie’s unforgettable old Hollywood-inspired look was born. We predict this is going to go down in Met Gala history.
