Alyssa’s Tie-Dye T-Shirt That Looks Like a Vintage Score

Get the same trippy, washed-out feel with a fraction of the legwork. Seemingly overnight, good ol’ fashioned tie-dye – beloved by arts-and-crafts enthusiasts at summer camp and generations of Deadheads alike – is back on the trend circuit in a big way.

Thanks to offerings from high end labels like Gucci, Proenza Schouler and The Elder Statesman, as well as cult favorite indie brand Online Ceramics (which is making the impossible-to-get tees forDead Company’s current tour), the DIY, psychedelic style just might replace the Hawaiian shirt as the season’s must-have item – particularly among fans of “dad fashion. ”

On my recent trip to Sydney, I found the holy grail of tie-dye T-shirts while on a day-long vintage shopping excursion: a hand-dyed ’80s-era relic from a surf shop in Manly Beach. It’s a children’s size large, but fits me like a dream – the type of garment that when told “it’s vintage,” people let out a disheartened sigh.

This perfect shirt left me wanting more, but sadly, my patience for secondhand shopping is limited to trips across the world.

Luckily, the collaboration between Solid Striped and Re/Done offers a washed-out tie-dyed top that provides the same retro, trippy feel, for a fraction of the legwork. The surf-inspired print expertly fades into the yellow, pink and blue dye, the ideal pairing for your high-waisted denim shorts on a hot summer day, or under a slipdress and leather jacket come fall.

While my recent vintage discovery was a very good start to my growing collection (and this T-shirt a solid addition), it’s also left me a bone to pick with my Grateful Dead-worshiping dad, who has an oil painting of Jerry Garcia hanging in his den, but not a single tie-dyed concert memento for me to steal. Let this be a lesson to you youngsters: Be very careful before you part with your #merch.

Solid Striped + Re/Done Venice tie-dyed T-shirt, $130, available here.
