All the Design Events Happening This August

While July was a relatively quiet month, August is shaping up to have some worthwhile events around the globe, from the quaint island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, to bustling São Paulo.

If your travels are taking you to Europe this summer, you’ll find plenty of unique and exciting design offerings that include new architectural walking tours of Copenhagen by the Dansk Arkitektur Center, exclusive evenings in Italy at Lake Como’s Villa del Balbianello, and more.

Whatever your travel plans, consider scheduling these events into your calendar.

A Walk Through Time: Explore Copenhagen’s Architecture

On August 1, the Dansk Arkitektur Center is launching a new walking tour that highlights 350 years of Danish architecture. The 75-minute tour starts at the Center’s OMA-designed home on the waterfront and includes such highlights as Christiansborg Palace, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, the Royal Library Garden, and the Danmarks Nationalbank designed by Arne Jacobsen. Tours take place daily at 1 P. M.

Nantucket by Design

Hosted by the Nantucket Historical Association, the annual fundraiser celebrates the charming island’s influence on American design with an exciting mix of lectures, panel discussions, gatherings, and more. Highlights include a design luncheon, private dinners at historic homes around the island, and a night at the Whaling Museum.

For a few evenings this summer, Lake Como’s legendary Villa del Balbianello hosts soirees that invite design aficionados to linger in this spectacular 18th-century villa with an aperitif, one of the most awaited events on Lake Como.

Intermediate Photography: Photographing Wright with Andrew Pielage

When: August 10–12
Where: Taliesin, Spring Green, Wisconsin

This weekend-long workshop offers the chance to immerse yourself in Frank Lloyd Wright’s 800-acre estate in Wisconsin and learn shooting and editing techniques from photographer Andrew Pielage, who specializes in architecture and travel photography. Participants will tour Wright’s home and learn about location scouting and shooting architecture with any lens.

Christien Meindertsma: Beyond the Surface

When: August 18, 2018–January 20, 2019

Contemporary Dutch design Christien Meindertsma is the subject of a new exhibition at the Vitra Museum, centering around her most important works and what she’s been up to lately. Her work explores sustainability, material research, and product life cycles, all themes that will be presented in the show.

The Rug Show returns to New York at the Javits Center.

The Rug Show returns to New York, bringing together producers, wholesalers, importers, and buyers under one roof to foster connection and community in the textiles and carpeting world. The nonprofit association is run by members of the industry, for the industry.

DW! São Paulo Design Weekend

The sixth edition of São Paulo’s Design Weekend is the largest design festival in Latin America, with more than 300 events held in museums, galleries, studios, stores, parks, public squares, and universities.

Baltimore Art, Antiques, and Jewelry Show

When: August 30–September 2

What was once a small regional event when it launched in 1980 has bloomed into the country’s largest indoor antiques show, featuring hundreds of international dealers. Their offerings are vast, including a wide range of furniture collections, American and European silver, work by top-tier artists, Asian antiquities, porcelain, Americana, antique and estate jewelry, glass, textiles, and more.

Miami Home Design and Remodeling Show

Specifically tailored to the needs of Florida’s housing market, the Home Design and Remodeling Show brings together some of South Florida’s best design talent and industry leaders.

Aarhus Festival

Denmark’s second city has been hosting the annual Aarhus Festival since 1965, but it’s become larger and more important since the city was named European Capital of Culture last year. In addition to design, the festival touches on many aspects of art and culture, including music, dance, architecture, and urban spaces.
