90s criss-cross ponytails are going viral – here’s how to do the fun nostalgic hair trend

Because of this, here at GLAMOUR, we’re always on the lookout for fun new hair trends that can be executed in a matter of minutes to act as a last-minute, fail-safe look.

And while TikTok is full of mesmerising hair hacks, the social media pros have a way of making their tutorials look a lot easier than they really are for us mere beauty mortals. That’s why, when we stumbled across the latest TikTok hair trend to go viral, we got seriously excited.

When it comes to looking for new hair inspo, we’re all ears. Trying to find cute styles that are achievable at home isn’t easy. From French plaits to bubble braids, some of the chicest hair looks out there might appear simple enough to create on yourself, but in reality, they usually require a trial run.

TikTok user @wendypearlorr took to the app to show off her seriously nostalgic, nineties criss-cross ponytails, and they really are as easy to do as they look. We’re getting serious Baby Spice vibes, and we’re not mad about it.

The trend involves wearing your hair in a middle parting (Gen Z rejoice), creating two little bunches either side and crossing them over for some retro volume. If you ask us, it makes for the ultimate summer hair trend by keeping your hair out of your face while looking cute at the same time (it’s perfect for any festivals you might have lined up). And the best bit? You only need a brush and some hair elastics. In fact, TikToker @erinduganjurchak proved how simple it is when she gave it a go herself.

Look like something you want to give a go? Here’s how to do it in three simple steps:

  1. Section out two small sections of hair at the front into bunches secure them with elastics.
  2. Take one section and twist it. Pull it over to the other side and add another small section of hair, securing it with another elastic. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Finish up by backcombing your finished bunches and set with some hairspray if your heart so desires!

If you want to take it one step further, why not keep going with the criss-cross motions until you’ve got two bunches at the back? Versatile, fun and super-easy.
