The latest fashions have, no doubt, reimagined the definition of femininity with collections that have a heavy dose of boss lady. But with so many bold fall trends, some of which are admittedly more intimidating than in seasons past, it can be hard to navigate what to wear and when.
So, we asked top industry insiders for the fall fashion trends you’ll want to wear again and again – and since there are plenty of options in stores, we helped narrow down those, too.
There’s a reason fashion month falls in September – it’s the start of fall, which inevitably sets the tone for what’s to come in the year ahead. And if this season’s fashion trends are any indication, we’re off to a strong start.
“The exciting part is that we’re seeing an evolution from simple fabrics and silhouettes to more textured, two-dimensional takes on autumnal classics like plaid and houndstooth,” says Erika De La Cruz, a TV host, author, and Macy’s ambassador. She also notes the “broad shoulders, powerful sleeves, and traditionally masculine accessories” that took fall 2019 runways by storm.
The power suit
“Strong shoulders have been around for a few seasons, but we saw an update to power suiting with sharp waistlines and belts,” says Nicole Russo, stylist and founder of Let’s Get You. “As seen at Alexander McQueen, you can up your blazer game with the belt built-in or recreate the look with clean separates.” This gives the suit more feminine lines without taking away from its edge.
Metallic animal print
Here’s a fashion trend that keeps recycling – but it’s back and better than ever this fall. Snakeskin, leopard, and dalmatian print all tinged with a metallic sheen have basically become the new neutral in 2019, according to style expert, Elizabeth Jones of Elizabeth Jones Personal Styling. And while you could go bold with printed pants or a maxi dress, one of her favorite ways to rock this look is with footwear. “There are many shoe options – think mules, booties, and knee-high boots – that you can wear with earthy colors or all black as your standout piece.”
We’re seeing a plethora of plaid this season, ranging from classic buffalo check to exaggerated houndstooth to glen plaid (a clear throwback to ‘80s style). The biggest thing when picking the perfect plaid for yourself, according to Chicago-based stylist Jenny Applegate, is to match the scale of the pattern to your silhouette. “I’m very tall, so I can pull off a larger-scale plaid pattern,” she says. “But if you are petite, look for a smaller print since bigger ones will overwhelm your frame.”
With grunge still making a big play this season, Applegate says combat boots are a great way to wear a functional shoe that’s also fashionable. She loves the mix of wearing a “hard” combat boot with a feminine dress and blazer.
When it comes to fall fashion trends, puff sleeves are back in a major way. “We’re saying goodbye to flat fabric shoulders this season and welcoming a rouged, ruffle silhouette to the tops of blouses, coats, and dresses alike,” says De La Cruz. “Puff sleeves complement dresses ranging from floor length to minis.” She recommends wearing the look atop your favorite t-shirt for a feminine, but powerful look. Or, try a puff sleeve sweater for something a bit subtler.
