It’s a rare treat when a fashion trend comes round that looks stylish and also makes every body shape look its hottest, so we are are thrilled that flared jeans are back with a bang this year. Obviously, their Y2K aesthetic (via the 1970s) perfectly feeds our need for nostalgia — but flared jeans (particularly high-waisted styles) just look so damn good on every single shape.
But it seems *you* already know that. ASOS have been selling approximately fifty pairs of flares every. Single. Hour. Their Gen Z customers are super keen to experience trends from the 90s (and Naughties) that they didn’t get involved with last time… See also: crop tops.
Flared jeans are perfect for nailing that Naughties mood. Wear them out with a strappy sandals, a butterfly top or cowboy boots. Anything fluffy and pastel will also be a good match for the Y2K aesthetic.
But, if you’re not such a fan of Y2K style — and, to be fair, it could be a little iffy at times — flared jeans can be classically styled to look eternally chic. Your best bet is to look for a pair that feel like vintage jeans from the Seventies so find a pair with high-waist details and retro vibes like the almost iconic Flared High Waist Jeans from & Other Stories. The patch pockets add a vintage touch (and who doesn’t love pockets? ) At the other end of the price spectrum are Gucci’s Appliqued High Rise Flared Jeans which are the absolute definition of a forever purchase. Teamed with a neutral coloured blazer and simple t-shirt you’ll be living the Old Money aesthetic.
Can’t choose a colour? Dark indigo jeans are the most versatile shade to pick — they work with crisp shirts on office days and tiny chainmail tops on nights Out out. Mango’s Mid Rise Flared jeans are a pair you’ll wear for years (remember to turn them inside out before washing and use a cool temperature to preserve their colour. )
There is something inherently chic about black denim, too (we’re into Topshop’s Joni Flared Jeans) although printed styles are having a moment (H&M’s Flared Low-Rise Printed Jeans are absolutely on trend. )
