Zendaya was super honest about her hormonal acne and it’s so damn relatable

Zendaya may be known for her acting chops and perennially glowy skin, but just like us, she struggles with hormonal acne breakouts.

On August 8, the actor tweeted, “My hormonal breakouts popping up every month unwelcome, just when I think I got my skin on lock,” along with choice usage of the Internet-favorite “ANTM woman entering door” GIF. In response, one follower replied with a succinct “MOOD. ” Another added, “Your skin is flawless but go off queen. ”

“Hormonal acne is typically associated with hormone fluctuations during puberty, but also commonly affects women in their adult years,” New York City dermatologist Dr. Shereene Idriss says.

“About 50% of women in their twenties have acne usually due to hormonal fluctuations, and a number of factors may contribute to this, including menstruation. Teenage hormonal acne appears as breakouts along the T-zone of your face, however, adult hormonal acne affects the jawline in a cyclical fashion. ”

In other words? If you’re constantly getting stubborn breakouts along your chin – and you’re not seeing results with skincare products – consider seeing a dermatologist who can help find the most effective acne treatment for you.

“When treating hormonal acne, topical medication doesn’t do much,” Dr. Idriss says. “You need to address the issue internally with certain types of oral contraceptives – not all are created equal – and anti-androgenic medication such as spironolactone. ”
