Why I’m Choosing a First Touch Over a First Look On My Wedding Day

Why I’m Choosing a First Touch Over a First Look On My Wedding Day

I’ve been struggling with the decision of whether or not I want to have a first look on my wedding day. When my photographer first started to note the important photos I want to be captured on my big day, he inquired about doing a first look. While I don’t consider myself a traditional person, I do find that I’m gravitating toward many wedding traditions when planning. Do I save this moment for the aisle as brides have typically done in the past, or do I reserve it for just the two of us pre-ceremony?

After much thought, I think I’ve come up with a good solution. Instead of doing a first look, my fiancé and I will do a first touch. This is a staged moment your photographer or videographer choreographs before your wedding nuptials. To create a first touch, the bride and groom are typically located at the corner of a building, separated by a door, or standing back to back. Then, they reach out for each other’s hand and exchange a few words or notes. While they won’t see each other before the wedding, they do get to share a moment of excitement before the ceremony.

This photo op is just what I’ve been looking for. It is traditional in the sense that I will see my fiancé for the first time when I walk down the aisle, but I will have a few minutes with him before our nuptials to calm my nerves (I don’t handle spotlight too well, so I already know I’m going to be a wreck). I know this private and tender moment between us will be cherished forever.
