Whitney’s Professional-Looking Crop Top

Not as much of an oxymoron as it sounds. Grammar The Exclamation Crop, $195, available here.

At some point in college, a friend pointed out to me that I wore crop tops to class almost every day that I didn’t have to go to work after. He was right. I was working an office job for the first time ever, and I was the youngest person employed there by far.

The discomfort I felt about the unofficial uniform of blazers and pencil skirts meant I was prone to loosening up my look as much as possible when I wasn’t in the office. To me, crop tops – with their youthful connotations and just a hint of skin – felt like the perfect way to do that.

To this day, I still love a good crop top, but I also spend more time in the office than I do out of it. That’s why this shirt from ethical New York-based brand Grammar would be perfect for my current phase of life.

The abbreviated length and swingy shape make it feel carefree in all the right ways, but the double-breasted front and crisp white cotton mean it would look quite smart paired with high-waisted trousers and a pair of low heels. That the shirt would be equally at home with denim cut-offs on the weekend is just an added bonus. Now that’s what I call the best of both worlds.
