We’re barely halfway through awards season, but this racy 90s trend is already all over the red carpet

While the majority of us are gently speeding up our walk to the shops and layering an extra roll-neck beneath every layer in order to combat January’s biting temperatures, on the other side of the pond, celebrities are serving up a serious lesson in grit and determination.

Who says a 5°C Sunday night isn’t the perfect opportunity to bare a little skin?

We may have been hunkered down on the sofa wrapped up in our cosiest dressing gowns last night, but some of our favourite actresses were busy braving the red carpet for the annual SAG Awards. And we mean ‘braving’ in the truest sense of the word.

While we’ve admittedly spent the majority of our morning swooning over the Brad/Jen reunion, we’ve also devoted a little time to trend-spotting – the major one this awards season proving to be the bare midriff. Brrrrr…

Introduced to the red carpet a couple of weeks ago as the Golden Globes kicked off the season, Sienna Miller gave a nod to the nineties trend in Gucci via a cut-out detail over the stomach, while Taylor Swift followed suit in Etro.

Just a week later, Zendaya landed herself the top spot on pretty much every ‘Best Dressed’ list after storming the Critics’ Choice Awards in a cropped $15,000 breastplate by Tom Ford, with a mid-rise skirt making way for a bit of midriff action.

We like to think that three makes a trend, so when Charlize Theron, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Dakota Fanning all arrived at the SAG Awards last night with a sliver of stomach on show we took it upon ourselves to officially dub the exposed midriff the Angelina-leg of 2020.

Scroll down to lap up all the midsection action for some serious 90s style inspo…
