Rihanna Discusses Her Conundrum of Being “Thicc” and Why “It Comes With a Price”

What comes to mind when you think of Rihanna? For us, it’s queen, Bad Gal, badass, and superstar, to name a few, and now we’re officially adding body-positivity icon atop that list.

In the infamous September issue of British Vogue, not only did the 30-year-old multihyphenate pose for a series of stunning photos, but she’s making history as the first black woman to cover the magazine. Editor in Chief Edward Enninful asked the question we were all thinking, about what it’s like to be the person every girl gushes over and idolizes in all aspects of life, and Rihanna’s response is modesty at its finest. “OK, you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m ‘thicc’ now. ”

Rihanna is the wise woman who once said, in response to body shamers, “If you can’t handle me at my 2007 Gucci Mane, then you don’t deserve me at my 2017 Gucci Mane,” and she’s always spoken up for herself when people comment on her figure.

In the interview, she remained as candid as ever and suggested that she’s ready to start working out again. “I’m about to get back into the gym and stuff, and I hope I don’t lose my butt or my hips or all of my thighs,” she said. “I’ll lose some but not all. And I think of my boobs, like, ‘Imma lose everything, everything goes! ‘”

She added, “But, you know, it comes with a price. You want to have a butt, then you have a gut. ” Well, Rihanna, you may not have to compromise your gorgeous curves after all. With the right amount of weightlifting, you can naturally build curves (or enhance them) and grow lean muscle in all the right places. This isn’t the first time Rihanna has discussed loving her body no matter what the number on the scale says, and she brought that attitude to life with her inclusive Savage x Fenty lingerie line.

Earlier this year, when discussing her lingerie line in the June issue of Vogue, she opened up about her own fluctuations with a lighthearted attitude that we all appreciate. “You’ve just got to laugh at yourself, honestly. I mean, I know when I’m having a fat day and when I’ve lost weight. I accept all of the bodies,” she said. “I’m not built like a Victoria’s Secret girl, and I still feel very beautiful and confident in my lingerie. ”

Preach! It’s women like Rihanna who are changing the conversation and unattainable standards we have for women based on what we see on the runway or on social media. She made headlines with a huge range of 40 Fenty Beauty foundation shades, featured anything but basic models in her Fenty lingerie campaigns, and is shifting the way we see women in the spotlight. Her impact on the industry is incredible, and we’ll always love her for it. So, what’s next, Rihanna? Should we start saving up for a new Fenty athleisure line? LMK.
