Maria Really Likes This Baking Soda-Free Deodorant

Combined with an underarm primer, too! Meow Meow Tweet Baking Soda-Free Deodorant Stick, $20, available here.

It’s been two years since I jumped on the natural deodorant bandwagon and haven’t looked back. But I’d be remiss to say that it wasn’t an easy journey. When I first ditched my drugstore antiperspirant for an all-natural version, my armpits started to get dark patches on them.

It wasn’t irritating or uncomfortable, just very unpleasant to look at. After some online research, I learned that baking soda was the culprit and that the side effect is more prone for those with darker skin tones.

So, I had to hunt for natural deodorants that didn’t have baking soda, which, surprisingly, was a lot harder than I thought. It seemed rare for a natural deodorant to actually publicize that it’s baking soda-free, and I often found myself studying ingredient lists to make sure “sodium bicarbonate” wasn’t in the mix. For someone who barely experiments with new beauty products and is admittedly a little bit lazy with her beauty routine, the whole process felt a little too consuming.

Luckily, the people behind Meow Meow Tweet, which got me into the natural deodorant game in the first place, reached out about their new baking soda-free product. Obviously, I offered to give it a try, and they kindly added in an underarm primer, too, which, in all honesty,I had to get to used to over time. (You try slathering lotion on your pits for the first time! It’s a little weird! ) I started to notice that my underarms’ dark coloring was fading away nicely, though I can’t officially say that the primer was the ultimate reason for it.

As for Meow Meow Tweet’s first foray in a natural deodorant without baking soda, I have to say that I’m pretty pleased. Right now I like the rose geranium scent, and in the fall, I plan to swap for the cedar spruce. (Seasonal deodorants? How classy. ) Plus, its compact, travel-friendly size makes application quick and easy. On particularly hot and humid days, I throw on the underarm primer first for extra coverage.
