Gingham Goals: How To Wear The Season’s Hottest Print

Gingham is a print everyone knows, and while many may associate the checks with summer picnics, it was brought to the fashion forefront by ‘50s style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot.

This year, the preppy pattern was seen at shows like Tome, Christopher Kane, and Adam Selman, all who offered it in several versions, and it’s popping up in street style, too. Gingham is officially the print of choice for the fashion forward – Blake Lively approves! – and we’re loving the current renditions.

“Mixing different sized checks and colors and incorporating new silhouettes like a ruffle skirt or off the shoulder top makes the print feel fresh and more modern,” says celebrity stylist and imaging expert, Zerina Akers. In addition to the classic silhouettes, this season you’ll find plenty of deconstructed looks and asymmetrical styles to tone down the preppiness while still keeping its charm.

When it comes to wearing the pattern, Akers suggests going all in with gingham on gingham, or pairing it with boyfriend jeans or a solid color. “Gingham looks great with bright pops of color; for example, a gingham shirt with a marigold skirt or gingham shorts with a red blazer,” she says. However you choose to style it, though, gingham will always have a certain je ne sais quoi.
