Designers Race to Incorporate Motorsport Motifs for Fall 2018

Styles derived from motorsports are nothing new for fashion in recent memory, with Vetements incorporating racing aesthetics as early as Spring 2016 and Supreme dropping motorcycle helmets the same year (one of which is now selling on eBay forjust under $5000, in case you were wondering).

Even more recently, there was Rihannas Spring 2018 collection for Fenty Puma, which not only featured motocross-inspired designs, but also literal motocross stuntmen flying on their bikes over mounds of pink sand as fashion editors and influencers looked on from the front row. Casual.

But this season proved that motorsport motifs are gaining even more momentum. Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid centered their final collaborative collection around the theme, with a host of racing-inspired pants and jackets sashaying down the runway. At Off-White, the trend was more subtly explored, with a few looks that mimicked the streamlined suits that racing professionals wear, re-interpreted for the fashion-conscious non-pro.

And at Versus Versace, the black and white check of auto-racing flags was heavily employed on jackets, pants, leather jackets and more.
